An app built with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or Lovable tends to fail in the same few places: keys committed to the repository, database rules that let anyone read every row, packages with known holes, payment webhooks nobody verifies, and a live site that serves more than it should. The [vibe coding security checklist](https://tuvio.dev/blog/vibe-coding-security-checklist) covers how to check each one by hand.

A scanner does the repetitive part. This post sets out five options side by side: GitHub's built-in tools, Snyk, Aikido Security, Semgrep and Tuvio. Each gets the same four questions: what it is, who it is for, what is free, and what the first paid plan costs. There is no ranking. They are built for different people, and the table at the end matches them to situations.

## GitHub's built-in tools

**What it is.** If your code is on GitHub, you already have some of this. Dependabot alerts you to dependencies with known vulnerabilities and can open pull requests that update them. Secret scanning and push protection catch credentials in commits. Code scanning, built on GitHub's CodeQL engine, flags vulnerable code, and Copilot Autofix suggests fixes for those alerts without needing a Copilot subscription.

**Who it is for.** Everyone on GitHub, for the free parts. GitHub's paid add-ons are aimed, in its words, at "teams and organizations".

**What is free.** Dependabot alerts, security updates and version updates are available on every GitHub plan, per [GitHub's security features docs](https://docs.github.com/en/code-security/getting-started/github-security-features). Secret scanning, push protection, code scanning and Copilot Autofix are free for public repositories. On a private repository, the free part is mainly Dependabot.

**First paid plan.** For private repositories, GitHub Secret Protection costs $19 and GitHub Code Security $30, each per active committer a month, per [GitHub's security plans](https://github.com/security/plans). GitHub's docs say they are bought on a GitHub Team or Enterprise plan.

**The catch.** On a private repository, secret scanning and code scanning are paid add-ons, and GitHub's docs say they are bought on a Team or Enterprise plan. Its pages describe no checks of database access rules such as Supabase RLS, and no scanning of a live site.

Whatever else you use, turn Dependabot on. [How to fix npm vulnerabilities](https://tuvio.dev/blog/how-to-fix-npm-vulnerabilities) covers what to do when its alerts arrive.

## Snyk

**What it is.** A security platform for code, open-source dependencies (including license checks), containers, infrastructure as code and secrets. It runs in IDE plugins, the command line, CI pipelines and pull-request checks, with a dashboard on top. Snyk Studio connects it to AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor and Gemini CLI through a local server. Snyk API & Web is its separate product for dynamic testing (DAST) of running web apps and APIs.

**Who it is for.** Developers and development teams. Its Free plan is "for individual developers and small teams", its Team plan "for development teams of up to 10 developers".

**What is free.** The Free plan is $0 a month with 5 projects and test limits on private repositories (100 Snyk Code tests a month), per [Snyk's plans page](https://snyk.io/plans/). Snyk API & Web has a free tier described as "great for a monthly single app scan".

**First paid plan.** Team, "starting at $25 / month", with 100 projects and 1,000 Snyk Code tests a month.

**The catch.** Free test limits apply to private repositories, and a test is not one scan: dependency scanning counts each manifest file where it finds vulnerabilities, infrastructure scanning each IaC file, and pull requests, pushes, retests and CLI runs all trigger tests. Getting started means connecting your repository through a source control integration or the CLI, then importing projects.

More detail, including when Snyk is the better choice, is in [Tuvio vs Snyk](https://tuvio.dev/blog/tuvio-vs-snyk).

## Aikido Security

**What it is.** One platform covering code, dependencies, secrets, infrastructure as code, containers, cloud accounts and the running app (DAST). It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps and scans on a schedule. AutoFix can deliver fixes as pull requests, in the IDE or in pull-request checks. It also has a server for AI coding tools.

**Who it is for.** Developers, security teams and CISOs. Its free plan is "for devs and curious minds", Basic "for small teams to cover the basics".

**What is free.** The Developer plan is "$0 / free forever": 2 users, 10 repositories, 2 container images, 1 domain, 1 cloud account and 10 AI AutoFixes a month, per [Aikido's pricing page](https://www.aikido.dev/pricing). Free workspaces are rescanned every 3 days, and scans can't be started by hand.

**First paid plan.** Basic, $350 a month including 10 users, as shown to US visitors (€300 in Europe), with 100 repositories, unlimited AutoFixes and pull-request security review.

**The catch.** Free workspaces are rescanned every 3 days and you can't start a scan yourself, pull-request checks are paid, its pricing table marks the server for AI coding tools as paid, and the next plan up is $350 a month.

More detail is in [Tuvio vs Aikido](https://tuvio.dev/blog/tuvio-vs-aikido).

## Semgrep

**What it is.** Static analysis of source code, without running it, in three products: Semgrep Code (your code), Supply Chain (dependencies, including malicious packages) and Secrets. The Semgrep Community Edition is an open-source scanner (LGPL-2.1) that analyses one file or function at a time; the paid AppSec Platform adds cross-file analysis, triage and reporting. It runs in the command line, CI, pull-request checks, IDEs and a web app. For AI coding agents there is an MCP server (`semgrep mcp`) and Semgrep Guardian, which scans each file an agent writes, in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and others.

**Who it is for.** Developers, AppSec teams and CISOs. Semgrep's docs describe the Community Edition as "best for small teams or personal projects" and the platform as "recommended for enterprise use cases".

**What is free.** The Free Edition costs nothing "for up to 10 contributors" and includes Semgrep Code and Supply Chain; Secrets is not included, per [Semgrep's pricing page](https://semgrep.dev/pricing).

**First paid plan.** Teams, "starting at $30 / month per contributor", priced per product: Code $30, Supply Chain $30, Secrets $15.

**The catch.** The Free Edition has no secrets scanning, and the paid plans are priced per contributor and per product. Its pages describe no scanning of a live site.

## Tuvio

**What it is.** A scanner for apps built with AI assistants. It reads a repository (code, dependencies, keys in the git history, Dockerfile, Kubernetes and Terraform settings, mobile config) and flags the shapes these apps get wrong: Supabase row level security in SQL migrations, Stripe webhooks that skip their signature check, AI SDKs running in the browser, and npm packages that are malicious or don't exist. It also scans a live site for what it serves to anyone: keys in its scripts, HTTPS and headers, cookies, email spoofing, libraries with known issues. An optional AI review checks which findings are real and writes a fix prompt for each, to paste into your own assistant. It runs in the browser, or from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex through Tuvio's server.

**Who it is for.** One person shipping an app an AI assistant wrote, who wants a plain-language answer before launch rather than a pipeline to configure. It does not run in pull requests, CI or an IDE, and it never edits your code.

**What is free.** Scans are free: the first scan of a repository needs no account, and a free account covers 5 repositories, a rescan a day per repository when there are new commits, 1 AI review, free site scans and access from your AI coding tool.

**First paid plan.** Pro, $29.99 a month: 20 repositories, rescans any time, 20 AI reviews a month, and weekly monitoring of 5 GitHub repositories and 5 verified sites. Outside Pro, AI reviews cost $1.99 for one or $4.99 for three.

**The catch.** 5 repositories on Free, one rescan a day per repository, and one free AI review; fix prompts after that are paid. No pull-request, IDE or CI checks on any plan, and nothing for containers or cloud accounts.

What it checks, stack by stack, and what it doesn't, is on the [coverage page](https://tuvio.dev/coverage).

## Which fits you

| Your situation | Fits |
| --- | --- |
| Your code is public on GitHub and you want free basics | GitHub's built-in tools |
| Your repository is private and you want vulnerable-package alerts at no cost | Dependabot |
| A team that wants every pull request checked before it merges | Snyk, Aikido Security or Semgrep |
| Findings in your editor while you write | Snyk, Aikido Security or Semgrep plugins |
| Code, containers and cloud accounts in one place | Aikido Security |
| An open-source scanner you run yourself | Semgrep Community Edition |
| Checks inside your AI coding agent as it writes | Semgrep Guardian, Snyk Studio or Aikido Security's server |
| One AI-built app, often on Supabase or Stripe, checked before launch, with fixes for your assistant | Tuvio |
| Testing a running app or its API | Snyk API & Web, or Aikido Security's DAST (with logged-in scans on its paid plans) |
| A quick look at what your live site serves, no account | Tuvio's site scan |

These are not either-or. Many solo builders will end up with Dependabot on, one tool in the editor, and a [free scan](https://tuvio.dev/scan) before launch.

Plans and prices were checked in October 2026 on each vendor's own pages, linked above. Aikido's prices depend on where you visit from; the figures here are those shown to US visitors. Tuvio's are on its [pricing page](https://tuvio.dev/pricing). Prices change, so check before you decide.
